On Sept. 25, students had an emergency dismissal, when flooded water came pouring into the building, canceling classes and causing damage to several areas of the school. Bronxville Schools Superintendent Roy Montesano enlisted more than 50 contractors to clean and sanitize any affected areas that took on water, which were isolated to the A, B, and C wings on the first floor.
As of Tuesday, Oct. 9, the first floor A and B wings have been reopened - with a few exceptions - and the cafeteria has reopened and is serving food to students and staff members.
Montesano noted; however, that they are still waiting for clearance at the blue gym, fitness, weight and locker rooms. They will also have to replace the floor of the main gym, which began over the weekend and is expected to be finished around the Thanksgiving holiday.
Montesano said that “as we continue to collect information about the flood event, it appears that the intensity of this storm was a contributing factor to flooding that occurred. Based on data from the National Weather Service, the maximum flow rate change (intensity) from this latest storm was substantially higher than that of the 2007 and 2011 hurricanes when we sustained significantly worse damage to our school building.
“While the two pumps we have in place saved the school from significant damage, we will be working with the town engineer, village officials and pump manufacturers to review our flood mitigation system and determine if any additional measures should take place, particularly as it relates to Meadow Avenue.”
